Moving Day Checklist This checklist will keep bedlam to a minimum. Print the page and check off each task item by item. Many items can be done ahead--do them the day before your move.1. Clearly mark and set aside items you don't want loaded.Tell the driver what not to load by walking him through at the beginning of your move. Make sure important paperwork pertaining to the move (or your important papers) don't get pack and shipped with household goods. 2. Pack Kids Favorite ItemsLet the kids pack a box of their favorite things that they'll want as soon as you arrive at your new home. Point out the box to the driver so that it will be one of the first boxes unloaded. Note: If you can, arrange to have someone take care of the kids (or pets) during loading and unloading. Have him/her bring the kids back before the truck actually leaves--they need to understand where their things are going. 3. Get Rid of Trash and Flammable GoodsGet rid of as much trash as possible before moving day. Last-minute garbage builds up the day prior to and the day of loading. Make a deal with a neighbor to use his/her trash container for last minute stuff. Items that are flammable will not be loaded by the driver or crew. Not sure of what these are? Please ask. Then you won't be stuck trying to get rid of them at the last minute. 4. Reserve a parking space for the moving truck. If you live on a busy street recruit friends or neighbors, and park cars one after another in front of your home. Move the cars when the truck arrives. The closer to your front door the truck parks, the more you save in time. 5. Clear WalkwaysMake it safe for the movers to get in and out of your house--remove all obstructions. For example move potted plants from porches, walkways and driveways; remove mats and rugs; remove items such as windchimes or plants; and disconnect the screen door spring so that it stays open. 6. Point out Special ItemsTake the time to point out goods that need extra special care at the beginning of your move. Also, point out any boxes or goods that you want unloaded first. 7. Take Care of the Driver and CrewWhile an elaborate meal isn't necessary, breakfast rolls in the morning, or a pizza for lunch are a gesture the crew will enjoy. The crew will appreciate water, soda, or Gatorade on a hot summer day. A cool drink can really help them move your goods. Let the crew know which restroom you want them to use. |
